Woodbury- Irene D. Milliun, a 63-year resident of Woodbury, aged 93 of Woodbury, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2023 in her home. She was the loving wife of 53 years of the late Justin John Milliun Sr.
Mrs. Milliun was born May 1, 1929 in Waterbury, CT, the beloved daughter of the late Peter and Amelia (Rybokas) Drevinskas.
She graduated from St. Joseph School, and Waterbury Catholic High School. She then attended Boston University and eventually graduated from The Teachers College of Connecticut in New Britain, where she met her husband. After graduating, she found her first teaching job at Barnard School. After raising her 4 children, she went on to become the teaching Vice Principal at St. Joseph School for 30 years.
She was nominated to participate in the outstanding leaders in American Education for 1976, in recognition of exceptional, professional achievement, and dedication to community service. She chaired the Science Fair at St. Joseph’s School for many years, taught Creative Writing for grades 1-8 at RESCUE Summer School, and conducted workshops for Creative Writing for local teachers.
She was a member of St. Teresa of Avila Church, its choir, Woman’s Guild, and many other ministries. Every Thursday at daily mass, Irene did the readings. She was one of the original members of the Woodbury People of Faith, which sponsored the Crop Walk, Celebrating the Family, and visitation of local churches.
She also was a member of the Women’s Club of Woodbury, serving as recording secretary, corresponding secretary, and co-chair of tickets for the Holiday House Tour. She served for many years on the Women’s Club Scholarship Committee. In addition, she was the hostess with the “mostess” for the Monthly Women’s Club Book Group meetings in her home. She volunteered at the annual daffodil sale for the American Cancer Society.
She enjoyed teaching, travelling, summer vacations at the Jersey Shore, summers spent at the Lake Quassapaug Outing Club in Middlebury, gardening, and golfing, even once making a hole in 1. Reading was a lifelong passion. Evenings were spent in her favorite chair with a good book.
She also enjoyed playing cards, board games, doing crossword puzzles. During her lifetime, Irene wrote thousands of thank you notes, birthday cards, and remembrances. She loved cooking, decorating and entertaining family and friends with holiday meals. She enjoyed having breakfast after daily Mass with her group of friends. Friday night dates with her husband were very important. For 15 years, after her husband’s death, her son, John, continued the tradition of taking his mom out to dinner and later doing take out every Friday night.
Her fundamental values in life were faith in God, strong work ethic, love of family, home and country. So too, were her favorite felines, Rocky and Penny. (Thank you Erika)
She is survived by her children, Justin Milliun Jr. of San Jose, CA, John Milliun of Woodbury, Leslie Milliun of Washington; granddaughter Erika Hay of Wyoming, grandson Jesse Milliun of Terryville; great grandsons Justin John and Thomas Allen Hay; great granddaughters, Vera Maeve and Genieve Danielle, as well as nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughters, Lisa Milliun, Lynnia Milliun and her brother, Peter Drevins.
Calling hours will be Sunday, January 22, 2023 from 4:00 until 6:00 pm at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, 2 School St. Woodbury. A Mass will be held at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 146 Main St. S, Woodbury, on Monday, January 23 at 11:00 am. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at church.
