Nina Dana died at home on Wykeham Road in Washington, CT, Thursday afternoon December 21st, at the age of 95.
Daughter of Katharine Alice Crane and George Peabody Montgomery, Nina was born in New York City. She attended The Brearley School and then earned her bachelor’s degree in classics at Bryn Mawr College. She married Richard H. Dana in 1948 and they enjoyed a long, loving marriage. He died in 1984.
An active volunteer, Nina worked in leadership roles supporting and fundraising for Brearley, and the Cosmopolitan Club and served as President of the Alumnae Association for Bryn Mawr College. A highlight for her was her time managing the Bryn Mawr Bookstore in Manhattan.
A woman of fierce intellect, she cultivated a love of learning in all her children and grandchildren. She built a life full of reading (history, politics, science, poetry), travel, lively debate, exploring back roads, and culinary adventures.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her children are Richard H. Dana of Albany NY, Cornelia Dana Mead of Owego NY and Nathalie Dana Thompson of Weston MA. Her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Beth) R. Dana, Richard H. Dana, Andrew P. Thompson, Cornelia (Nina) P. Thompson, Katharine N. Mead, James M. Mead. In her later years she was lovingly supported by a team of skilled caregivers.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 12th, 11am, at The First Congregational Church, 6 Kirby Rd., Washington, CT. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Gunn Memorial Library, 5 Wykeham Rd, Washington CT 06793 (gunnlibrary.org) or a charity of your choice. Munson Lovetere Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
