Jane Ann Hasselman Hocking

October 25, 1930 ~ April 21, 2017 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Jane Ann Hasselman Hocking, 86, died April 21, 2017 at her home in Roxbury, CT.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Hocking.  She was born October 25, 1930 in LaSalle, Illinois, the daughter of the late Albert and Elsie Fay Hasselman.

She attended Penn Hall Junior College, where she was named Penn Hall Girl, and then transferred to the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she graduated with a degree in physical education. She joined the Alpha Phi sorority in college and treasured a lifelong membership.

After college, she worked for a year as a kindergarten teacher before meeting the love of her life, James Robert Hocking, who had just graduated from the US Naval Academy.  They were married December 19, 1954 and embarked on a several year career of military service that included postings in Port Lyautey, Morocco and at the Pentagon.

After her husband left the service, Jane made homes for her family in Illinois, Massachusetts, Florida, New York, and Connecticut.  She had a knack for creating homes of comfort and beauty for her family of five children and eventually, eight grandchildren.  She enjoyed playing doubles tennis competitively in Weston, Massachusetts at the Weston Golf Club and took up golf later in life, which she enjoyed playing with her husband and other male members of her family.  She loved to garden and was a longtime volunteer member of the Cathedral Garden Conservancy at St. John the Divine.  She also served on the Alter Guild at Christ Church in Roxbury.

Jane is survived by her five children Scott, Leslie, Jennifer, Rachel, and Douglas, sons-in-law Jim Abbott and Bob Armington, daughter-in-law Melinda Abrams, and her grandchildren Sarah Jane, Sophie, Nicholas, Rosalie, Lily, Jacob, Peter, and Rebecca.  She was pre-deceased by her parents Albert and Elsie Hasselman and brother Tom Hasselman.

Visitation will be at 4-6 PM on Friday, April 28th at the Southbury Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, 235 Main Strret North Southbury, CT.  The funeral will be at 11 AM on Saturday, April 29th at Christ Church in Roxbury, CT, followed by interment at Roxbury Center Cemetery. There will be fellowship at Christ Church after the interment.
