Winna Jean Tierney passed away on December 24th, 2021, at 100 years old. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on October 29th, 1921. Her mother, Ella Foley, died when she was just 11 years old and Winna was raised by relatives in the deep south. At sixteen years old she entered nurses training in Memphis, TN.
She enlisted in the military at the start of World War II and the first air evacuation school was established at Bowman Field in November 1942. It was the first of its kind and the transport planes were C-47’s for carrying supplies to the troops at the front lines then used for carrying the wounded back to hospitals in England, Iceland, and the Azores. Her squadron, the 806th followed the US Army up through Germany and brought back wounded GI’s and people liberated from the concentration camps.
At the end of the war, she married Edward Tierney, a C-47 pilot and had three sons. They moved to Roxbury, CT. in 1955 and have lived there ever since. She is predeceased by her husband and one son, Brian Tierney who was killed in action in Vietnam. She is survived by two sons Thomas & Timothy Tierney: 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A special thanks for all the neighbors and friends that helped out over the years, have stopped by to chat and have stayed in touch. Also a thank you to Doctor Pacey Pet, his staff and the RVNA nurses, who were all wonderful.
