Virginia (Ginny) Havighurst Middleton, 87, of Southbury, CT died Sept. 5, 2023 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was born June 19, 1936 in Evanston, IL, the daughter of Marion P. Havighurst and Harold C. Havighurst. She graduated from Evanston High School and received a BA from Middlebury College and an MA in French from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She married John B. Middleton, Jr. on Sept. 5, 1959.
Ginny was selected to serve as a guide at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. She taught French in Ramsey, NJ, at Wolcott High School in CT and at the Waterbury Branch of the University of Connecticut. In 1977, Ginny and John moved to Southbury, CT when they purchased the Heritage Villager newspaper, which they published until they retired in 2000.
Ginny served as Vice Chair of the Southbury Library Board and Vice President of the Southbury Business Association. She and John served on the Heritage Village Ambulance for 19 years and taught ESL classes in Danbury, CT and with Global Volunteers in Poland. They sang in the Ridgewood (NJ) Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company and brought the troupe to Southbury to perform in Heritage Village for over 30 years. Ginny also played tennis into her 80s.
Ginny was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, John Middleton. She is survived by her husband of four years, Forest Herron, with whom she traveled to South Africa, the Far East, and the Baltic region. She leaves a daughter, Martha Bogucki, and her husband, Peter, and their children, Kevin and Colleen, and a daughter, Amy Knieriem, and her husband, Donald, and their sons, John, and Scott.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ginny's memory may be made to the Friends of the Southbury Library or the Alzheimer's Association.
A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Friday, Sept. 22, at The United Church of Christ Southbury, 283 Main St N, Southbury, CT.
