Shirley L. Vitale

Shirley Gleason Vitale passed away peacefully on September 29, 2022. She was the widow of Attorney Donald N. Vitale. Shirley was born on January 10, 1930 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She was raised in Chester, Massachusetts. Shirley was the eldest child of Harold Gleason and Grace (Soule) Gleason.

Shirley received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Vermont, where she majored in history and economics. She also earned a master’s degree in Library Science from Southern Connecticut State University. Shirley taught elementary school for several years.

Shirley was an enthusiastic tennis player, golfer, bridge player, and gardener. She was also a voracious reader. In addition, Shirley enjoyed traveling.

Shirley is survived by her loving children from her first marriage to Novello (Noel) Ruggiero: Noel Ruggiero Breg (Bill) of Watertown, Alisa Ruggiero (Tony Rinaldo) of Acton, MA and Kristin Ruggiero (Walter Dolan) of Sandy Hook. She is also by her grandchildren: Nathaniel Breg, Alexander Breg, Jonathon Morgan (Meghan), Nicholas Morgan and Christina Morgan.

Left also to cherish her memory is her stepson Terry Vitale and his wife Patricia of Florida and their daughter Danielle Vitale (John Rodzevik). Her sister Beverley Jaques and her husband Paul of New Hampshire, her sister-in-law Karla Gleason of Switzerland and many nephews and nieces.

Shirley was predeceased by her brother Philip Gleason and her sister Phyllis Gleason.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Harbor of the Village at East Farms and as well as the staff of Vitas Hospice of Watertown for their kind and devoted care of Shirley.

Calling hours will be Saturday, October 15th from 10am until 12:30pm, with a prayer service at 11:30am at the Southbury Funeral Home of Munson Lovetere, located 235 Main St. N.
