Southbury-
Sandra Marcus, née Sperling, of Southbury, CT, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023, just weeks after her 87th birthday.
Born October 1, 1936, to Fanny and Morris Sperling of the Bronx, New York, Sandy met the love of her life, Daniel Haber Marcus, when they were teenagers. They married on September 11, 1955, with a reception at Tavern on the Green in Central Park. She graduated from CCNY’s Baruch College with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and a minor in Psychology. She supported Dan as he achieved his doctorate from MIT, then embarked on her own career – first for charitable organizations as a case worker for troubled children, and later as a successful realtor.
Sandy was the proud matriarch of the Marcus family, whom she presided over with doting attention. She cheered, pushed, encouraged, questioned, and nagged her three sons as they pursued degrees and careers. She delighted in her six grandchildren, spending countless hours visiting Illinois, Connecticut, and Rhode Island for birthdays, sleepovers, b’nai mitzvot, and an extraordinary number of dance recitals.
We will miss her gift for conversation, her sharp intellect, her sugar-free recipes, and her hugs. Perhaps most of all, we will miss her memory: Sandy was the keeper of her family’s history, with crystal-clear recall and a talent for storytelling. We hope we listened carefully.
Sandy is survived by her devoted husband, Dan; her brother, Philip Sperling (Bonnie) of Boynton Beach, Florida; sons Craig (Karen), James (Lori), and Wayne (Rebecca); and grandchildren Olivia, Nathaniel, Samantha, Hannah, Talia, and Zinnia. She has been interred at the Farband Cemetery in Morris, CT. Donations may be made in her memory to The American Heart Association or The Jewish National Fund.
