Norman Schmidt Obituary

Norman K Schmidt, 86, known to his friends and family as “Poppy” passed away March 14, 2023 peacefully all the while surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born in Waterbury on November 8, 1936 the son of the late Charles and Gertrude (Carey) Schmidt. He graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1954, and obtained his Business Management Associate Degree at Post University while working with his family at their Hardware Store Schmidt, & Serafine’s,Inc.   He attended University of Connecticut School of Insurance and held several licenses in Securities, Insurance and Real Estate. He opened his first Insurance and real estate agency in 1970, the Schmidt Insurance Agency and Rosa & Schmidt Realtors. Over the years he worked with Martin & Rowland Inc, and Polaris Financials until his eventual retirement.

Norman was a member of the Southbury and Waterbury Lions Clubs, (Past President), the Waterbury Elks Lodge, Waterbury Board of Realtors (Past President). He also served with the Southbury Ambulance Association and the Southbury Tercentennial Executive Committee.

He was a fan of the UCONN Huskies, he had a passion for horses, gardening and enjoyed spending his years of retirement on his gentleman’s farm with his family.

Norman is survived by his former wife and friend Theresa Schmidt, his loving son Norman K. Schmidt, his loving daughter Lisamay Cleary-Cast(Schmidt) her husband Bruce Cast, and his loving Step-Son Anthony P Ciminera.

He also leaves grandchildren Joshua Cleary and Jordan Burns, Justin and Lisa (Grzywacz) Cleary, Justin Cast, Hannah Cleary and Christopher Coleman, and Alyssa (Cast) and Jonathan Nielsen.

Great-Grandchildren Andrew Hornack, Andrew Ciminera, Jack Gaudino, Conner Cast, Luca de Dufour and Mina May Cleary. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and their extended families.

In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his wife Rita M Schmidt, and his brothers Charlie and Gene Schmidt.

Norman’s funeral will be held at Midd-South Catholic Church, Sacred Heart RCC, 910 Main Street South in Southbury, Ct at 11 am on Saturday March 18, 2023.

Interment will be private at a later date.
