Nellie H. Daversa, 98, of Woodbury, passed peacefully in her sleep in her home, with her daughter close by, early Saturday morning, December 9, 2023.
Nellie was born on December 16, 1924, the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Risgelis) Baranauskas. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas J. Daversa and survived by her daughter, Maria; son-in-law, David Gulley; grand dog, Bono; grand cat, Patsy; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A longtime resident of Woodbury, Nellie was born and raised in Waterbury, graduating from Waterbury Catholic High in 1943. In 1944, she supported the war effort by building munitions in a local factory. She married in 1957 and later settled into life as a wife and mother. A lifelong learner, she took classes in computer programing in the 60’s, then studied psychology in the 90’s, all at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Through the years, she also took private lessons in oil painting and sold many of her works at local summer festivals. Dedicated to serving others, she spent countless years as a Girl Scout Troop leader and a religious instructor for young children. A devout Catholic, she was ordained as the first female Eucharistic Minister of St. Teresa of Avila Church in Woodbury in 1975. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Donations in her memory can be made to The National Council of the United States, Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
