Marie Anctil Obituary

Marie Louise (Richardson) Anctil passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Marie was an eighty-two-year-old lifetime resident of Prospect, CT. She is survived by Denis Anctil, her husband of fifty-four years, her three children Jim, Tom, and Therese Anctil, her two daughters in law Shannon Wyman-Anctil and Salli Szczesiul, her son in law Donald Dostie, and her grandchildren Frank, Callista, and Charlotte. She is survived by an extensive family of in-laws, nephews and nieces including her brother’s daughter Wendy (Richardson) Perez. Marie is preceded by her brother Herbert Richardson.

Marie was born on May 31, 1939 to Calvin M. Richardson and Marie Therese (Boisvert) Richardson. She graduated from Crosby High School in 1958, attended Western Connecticut State University, and received a Masters in Education from Southern Connecticut State University. She proudly explored the United States as a young woman, teaching for a year in Wyoming and taking college courses in Hawaii. Her exploration years were cut short by the death of her mother and her need to come home to her father who she cared for twenty years. Undaunted by the unplanned change in life, she continued to teach school, acquired two horses named Smokey and Wickett, married Denis and had three children.

Shortly after the birth of Tom, her second child, she decided to leave teaching and follow her mother's footsteps into the antique business. She expanded the business and in 1976, with Denis’ help, opened a Jefferson Pine furniture store at the Heritage Village Bazaar in Southbury. She stayed in business in Southbury for forty years, moving the store to Main St. South and renaming it Marie’s Country Furnishings after the Bazaar was torn down.

Marie was an unassuming woman who had the independence, courage, and strength to inspire those who knew and loved her. Her kindness and her willingness to always give people the “benefit of the doubt” made her a role model to her students and her children and earned her the respect of the thousands of customers that shopped in her store over the many years of her career. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
