Karen Diane (Downes) Whitcomb (73) passed away surrounded by the love and comfort of her family on February 2, 2020 at Yale New Haven Hospital’s Smilow Cancer Center. She was the beloved wife of Roger Whitcomb for 50 years.
Karen was born November 15, 1946, daughter to the late Allen and Edna Downes. She grew up in Middlebury, graduated from Woodbury High School and was a long time Southbury resident. After high school Karen was employed at SNET becoming the youngest supervisor at that time. She went on to work for Purfect Oil in Southbury for over 20 years.
Karen enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling the U.S. with her husband in their motor home, camping at the Breachway in Rhode Island, routing for the UCONN Girls Basketball team and was an avid reader.
She was a loving mother to her three children. She nurtured, taught and guided them throughout their lives. She was the keeper of memories, family recipes, important dates and family facts.
Karen was a lifelong member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury. She was a very active member doing many jobs over the years, including treasurer, alter guild, usher and she was an interictal part of their annual Gingerbread Village.
Most of all she loved her family, especially her husband Roger and their three children, Elizabeth Moliengo and her husband Daniel, Darlene Goetz and her husband Jason, and Stephen Whitcomb and his wife Jennifer.
Karen is survived by her siblings Allen Downes, Barbara Maxwell (Philip), Cathy Gugliotti (Joseph), Patricia Colwell (Dennis), Jeffrey Downes (Jacqueline), and predeceased by her sister Marilyn Smith. Karen leaves behind five treasured granddaughters who she loved beyond words, Morgan, Melanie, Marjorie, Ripley and Trinity.
Karen was a beautiful person, a charming date, wonderful wife, terrific mother, and doting grandmother. She will truly be missed but her loving memory will never fade.
Calling hours will take place Saturday February 8th 9:00-11:00 A.M. at Munson Lovetere Funeral Home located 235 Main St North Southbury. A funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. at St. George’s Church, 393 Tucker Hill Rd Middlebury. Burial will be in the spring and at the convenience of the family.
