Southbury- Jane T. Brennan, 96 of Southbury, CT passed away on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14, 2023. Cherished wife of 68 years to Pierce V. Brennan of Southbury, CT, previously of Yonkers, NY. Dear daughter of the late Mary Schnaufer and Edward Darken of the Bronx, NY. Beloved mother of Nancy Gallivan and her husband Mark of Walpole, MA, Marianne Haynes of Madison, CT, her son-in-law Thomas Haynes of Oxford, CT, and Thomas Brennan and his wife Mindy of Asheville, NC. Devoted grandmother to her nine grandchildren: Patrick Haynes and his wife Jacqueline, Jessica Greely and her husband Matt, Adam Peters and his wife Vickie, Mark Gallivan, Ali Gallivan, Trevor Haynes, Suzy Gallivan, Annie Gallivan and Maggie Haynes. Treasured great-grandmother to her six great-grandchildren: Aiden, Claire, Landon, Ava, Chase, and Hudson. Adored sister of John Darken and his wife Sheila of Tappan, NY. Dear sister-in-law to Suzy Gallagher and her late husband Charlie of Yonkers, NY. Lovingly cared for by her honorary daughter Pam Singh, for many years. Also survived by her precious six nieces and three nephews.
Jane was a wonderful mom and a devoted wife who entered heaven aptly on Mother’s Day after already beginning to celebrate her upcoming 68th wedding anniversary on May 21, 2023. Jane was born in the Bronx, NY on October 28, 1926. She was an avid learner and a graduate of Our Lady of Angels parochial school, Cathedral High School, Hunter College, and Columbia University. Jane enjoyed a rewarding career at the American Museum of Natural History and the New York Botanical Garden Library.
She led a life of service and shared her passion for literacy with her community. Jane volunteered with the Westchester Medical Center Pediatric Outpatient Clinic where she dutifully read to children in the waiting rooms for over 20 years. She gave back in many other ways including teaching community members to read English through the Yonkers Public Library.
Jane loved spending time with her adoring husband and family, raising her children, and watching her grand and great grandchildren grow. She was an open-minded and independent thinker, and was an avid Scrabble and Rummikub player. She will be remembered for her gentleness, compassion, faith, and unending support and dedication to family and friends.
Calling hours for Jane will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Sacred Heart Chapel from 9:00 - 10:00 AM, 910 Main Street Southbury, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held following calling hours in the Church. Burial will take place on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at the Holy Mount Cemetery at 11:00 AM, Scarsdale, New York.
