Irene Phelan Obituary

Irene Norma Turner Phelan, born on November 16, 1927, to William and Marion (Madin) Turner, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 13, 2021. She grew up in Woodbury, and then became a settled resident of Southbury.

She had many friends throughout her long life that she shared much with, including trips to Europe (in her 80’s), dinners and dancing to Willie and Jan’s music, picnics, stock car races, and traveling and camping in her RV with Bob. Irene was always present at every event possible and especially shined in her golden years. She loved photography and most Birthday cards were made with her own photographs and handwritten. Irene brought an artistic flare to everything she did and that carried into her incredible cooking and recipes that she always “doctored up”. She loved flowers and shared her love of them with Chelsea and Chelsea’s Mom Donna. She loved baseball and watching Tyler play from Tee Ball through High School, rarely missing a game. She was a huge fan of basketball too, loved the LA Lakers, but her real favorite team and event, was watching the UCONN Women play with her best friends. Irene was an early ‘woman in business’, she was the owner of the Laurel-Newtown Taxi during the 1970’s and 80’s, and she also owned a Deli on Main St., Southbury.  She survived breast cancer and was aggressive with her treatment which was ahead of her time. Irene was a lifelong Grand Matron of the Eastern Star. She spent many years involved with the local schools’ hot lunch programs and served on the Board of Education. Irene will be remembered as an exceptionally strong woman with a wealth of knowledge. She had an amazing ability to touch people’s hearts and had an infectious smile. Her beautiful blue eyes will be missed by many, and she will be happily greeted by many family and friends in her new journey.

Irene led a long and interesting life as a sister to brother Bruce Turner and his wife Laura (Hartung), predeceased by brothers, William, (Billy), Robert (Bobby), Thomas (Tommy). She was predeceased by husband Robert Phelan, and a mother to two sons, Glenn Metcalf (Montgomery, Alabama) and Gary Metcalf (Danbury, CT.). A grandmother to Christy (Metcalf) Savage of Montgomery, AL, Chelsea (Metcalf) Mastriani of Plymouth, CT. and Tyler Metcalf of Middletown, CT and Great Grandmother to Kyle Skelton, Blakley Savage, Turner Savage and Great Great Grandmother to Jackson Skelton, all of Montgomery, Alabama. She was also a favorite Aunt of many dear Nieces and Nephews.
