Obituary

WOODBURY – Georgia P. Dudley, 84, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020, after a short illness. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, G. Clayton Dudley and her daughter Wynne.

Georgia grew up in the Finger Lakes region of New York and graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Biology. At Cornell, Georgia met Clayt and they lived nearby while he attended Cornell Veterinary School.

A lifelong connection to the area was made. The Paddock cottage at Farley’s Point on Cayuga Lake was a frequent gathering spot for family and friends. After Clayt graduated from Cornell Vet School, they lived in Puerto Rico for several years where he worked as a USDA veterinarian. They eventually settled in Woodbury, where they worked together to build his veterinary practice.

Georgia also taught biology and science at area schools. Active within the community, they supported local businesses and organizations, particularly those emphasizing education and nature conservancy.

Georgia loved the arts and found inspiration in people’s creativity whether it was music, paintings, written word, sculpture or handmade crafts. She was an ardent believer that arts offered intangible benefits to our lives and was a strong supporter of local artisans and art organizations.

Extremely giving to both friends and family, Georgia always remembered a birthday, celebrated personal milestones, knew when words of encouragement were needed, and her knack of funny cards was second to none. She had endless compassion for her family and friends.

She was a magician in making events/experiences happen with flair, whether it was last-minute trip to a UConn basketball game, organizing activities at the annual Saratoga track outings, family reunions or activities for the “non-horsey attendees” at Wynne’s horse shows.

Independent, strong, and a lifelong learner, Georgia enjoyed “lively” discussions and valued the art of the opinion.

Georgia will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews, Susie Stumpf (Capt. Robert USN (Ret.), Dr. Bradley Paddock (Amy), David Paddock (Susan), Dr. George “Bud Knefely, Patricia Paddock (Gerard) and Bruce Paddock (Arliss), Noelani Sturdevant, Jay Sturdevant (Emma) and several cousins.

Others who will cherish her memory include the White/Beresford/Fox, Sweeney/Slenger, and Koon/Morehouse families of Farley’s Point; from Woodbury, the Galvin and Seymour families and Carrie Jalbert.

We would like to thank her close friend Beverly Dennen (Phillip), who provided Georgia much support and comfort over the past few months. Wynne and Clayt especially would like to thank Joanne Seymour, Gail Seymour, and Jim Press, who provided so much support to us and her over her last days. We take great comfort that she is now with her dear cousin Cappy.

Georgia’s memorial service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Middlebury Congregational Church, 1242 Whittemore Road, Middlebury. Burial will be private.

Donations in Georgia’s memory maybe made to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Wildlife Refuge, 159 Sapsucker Woods Road, Ithaca, NY 14850; or the Mattatuck Museum, 63 Prospect St., Waterbury, CT 06702.
