On Friday, June 26th, George William Lewis, Retired Airforce Major and Eastern Airlines’ Captain died peacefully in hospice care at home with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and freedom fighter.
George was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on June 6th, 1932. After graduating high school, George enlisted and was later commissioned in the United States Air Force (1952-1967). George was a Vietnam Veteran and received the Air Medal and several other awards. After the Air Force, George flew for Eastern Airlines and retired as a Captain in 1988. With his strong work ethic, George continued to serve the community by delivering flowers for Woodbury Floral Design.
George is survived by his wife Linda Verney Lewis, their son Christopher John Lewis, their daughter Marnee Lewis Palladino and her husband Dean and their daughters Kaela and Ella, and their daughter Rebecca Lewis and her daughter Sarah Wolfenden, George’s brothers Tim and Michael Matherly and Tim’s wife Julie, George’s son David Lewis and his wife Sherrie and their son Brian. George is predeceased by his nephew Tommy Matherly, his son-in-law Kenneth Wolfenden, and George’s son Stephen.
A private family burial will take place. George’s family is very grateful to New Milford VNA and Hospice for their support and Loving Care. Donations can be made in George’s memory to New Milford VNA and Hospice, 68 Park Lane, New Milford, CT 06776. To honor George’s memory, a Celebration of Life will be held in September (George and Linda’s 55th wedding anniversary). Date to be announced.
