Gary DeWitt Obituary

In Loving Memory of Gary DeWitt

Gary DeWitt, a beloved resident of Southbury, CT, passed away in the home that he built on November 29, 2023, at the age of 62. Surrounded by the love of his family, Gary's departure leaves behind a legacy of warmth, dedication, and a profound love for those who meant the most to him.

Born in Stamford, CT, Gary developed a passion for carpentry at the age of 8, a love that was passed down for 3 generations and would shape the course of his life. He nurtured this interest while working alongside his grandfather, Fred DeWitt, at Stamford Millwork, specializing in custom-designed kitchens. In 1986, Gary founded his own carpentry business, Building Specialist, LLC, a venture that started with a Mickey Mouse telephone and would thrive for decades and become a family tradition as his sons, Charles and Ben, later joined him as apprentices.

In 1986, Gary also married the love of his life, AnnMarie DeWitt, and for 37 wonderful years, they shared the joys and challenges of life together. Gary is survived by AnnMarie and their five children and their spouses: Peter DeWitt (Ashley), Benjamin DeWitt, Charlotte Vilanova (Matt), Travis “Erica" DeWitt, Charles DeWitt (Bridget).

In addition to his immediate family, Gary is survived by his grandchildren Zoey and Logan DeWitt, who brought immeasurable joy to his life. He is also survived by his siblings, David DeWitt (Alex), Denise DeWitt-Drake (Peg), and Chris DeWitt (Amy).

Gary's commitment to his community extended beyond his professional endeavors. In 2011, he began coaching for Southbury (Pomperaug) Youth Baseball, leaving an indelible mark on the organization. Even after retiring from coaching, Gary continued to volunteer, dedicating his time to grooming, lining, and maintaining the fields. His impact on the youth of Southbury will be remembered for generations to come.

An avid fan of the New York Mets, Gary's love for baseball was only surpassed by his fondness for Mounds candy bars. His spare time was often spent tinkering around the house or enjoying the company of family and friends. His 1973 Pontiac Firebird brought him joy, reflecting his appreciation for craftsmanship and timeless classics. In addition to Gary’s passions for collecting Hi-Fi stereo equipment and vintage pinball machines and video games, he held a unique relationship with beverages. Although he wasn't a fan of alcohol in general, there was an exception that brought a smile to his face—Heineken beer.

Gary's generous spirit extended to his kitchen, where he loved having everyone over to cook for. Whether it was baking chocolate chip cookies at 3 am or creating a single milkshake from a gallon of ice cream, he found joy in sharing simple pleasures with those he cared about. His love for Stew Leonard’s Egg Nog became a cherished tradition during the holiday season.
