Eugene Springer Obituary

Southbury- Eugene Holder Springer passed into eternal rest on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the age of 76.  Eugene (Gene) was the loving husband of Mercedes (Lopez) Springer. He was born in Port Chester, New York on May 8, 1944, son of the late Constance Hill Pitney and Edward William Springer.

Gene attended Edison School in Port Chester as a child where his grandmother, mother, siblings and two children also attended. He served as an acolyte and sang in the boys’ choir at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Greenwich, CT.  He was also a dedicated Boy Scout and was always willing to help others. Gene graduated from Port Chester High School in 1962.

As a young man, Gene stocked shelves at Nostro’s Grocery Store, worked at Manero’s Restaurant, at the Showboat as a desk clerk and as a teller at Greenwich Federal Savings & Loans. He served in the Naval Reserves in New Rochelle, NY from 1961-1963.  He worked as a manager at Matteo’s Restaurant in Bronxville where he met his beautiful and loving wife of 51 years.  They married in 1969 in Yonkers and were blessed with 2 children, Jennifer Victoria and Brian Edward. He worked for Union Carbide in the IT Department as an invoice auditor from 1972-2001.

As a young father, he drove his family in the blue station wagon down to Florida for trips to Disney and to visit family. Along the way, he would strike up conversations with other vacationers and often end the conversations saying, “It’s a small world” with the biggest smile when similarities were discovered.

Gene enjoyed walks in the woods and photographing flowers and old barns. He entered some photos in an art gallery in Bethel, CT.  He was a lifelong Mets fan and was always hoping for that next world series win.  Gene volunteered at the Woodbury Food Bank and donated blood regularly to the Red Cross. He was a member of the Putnam Park Land Trust and contributed to the U.S. Veterans, Wounded Warrior Project for many years.  Gene looked forward to his weekly lunches at Julio’s with his wife, Mercedes. He enjoyed spending time with his four grandsons and attended almost every baseball, basketball, and football game they played. He was always so proud of his children and grandchildren who lived close by and spent time together often.

Gene is survived by his wife Mercedes, his sister Joyce Ritch and husband Roger of California, his brother Bert Pitney and wife Veronica of Seymour; his daughter Jennifer Welton and husband Craig of Southbury, his son Brian Springer and wife Allyson of Southbury; his grandchildren Nicholas, Jake, Matthew and Brody.

He was predeceased by his brother Edward (Ted) Springer and wife Jan of Indianapolis, Indiana.
