Elvira Manduley Obituary

Elvira Rodriguez Manduley, age 82, of Woodbury, beloved wife of Flavio Manduley, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 18, 1941, she was one of two daughters of the late Colonel Jose Antonio and Elvira Rodriguez. Elvi, as she was affectionately known, grew up in Guanabacoa, Havana, Cuba. She graduated from La Milagrosa High School, received a teaching degree and was an active member of the Columbus Squires.

When she was a teenager, she met the love of her life, Flavio, who happened to be delivering a package to her friend. It was love at first sight. They soon married and enjoyed over 60 wonderful years together.

Elvi and Flavio were forced to leave their beloved family and country in 1962 after opposing the Communist regime. Finding asylum in the United States, they began their new life with only the love and support of each other. They settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where Elvi was a teacher, but then she chose to forego her career as she and Flavio raised their cherished daughter, Ivette. Elvi was the cornerstone of their family as they navigated their new life.

Never forgetting the opportunity and freedom this country gave her family, Elvi was also very active in local and national politics in her spare time. Elvi shared her personal experiences with all around her, challenging others to understand and appreciate the rights and civic duty we have in this country. In 1985, she was invited to President Reagan’s Inauguration and was recognized as part of his Presidential Task Force.

Most of all, “Ita” loved spending time with her family at their home in Woodbury, Connecticut. She frequently reminded the family of their cultural roots with traditional Cuban meals and music. She was also extremely proud and supportive of her grandchildren, David and Matthew Gerics, throughout their academic and athletic endeavors.

Her sweetheart Flavio, daughter Ivette, two grandchildren David and Mathew, cousins Pili, Mario, Giancarlo and Camille (Krawczun) Dumenigo as well as her extended family in Cuba and across the United States will carry on her legacy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital (1-800-822-6344).
