Elizabeth “Bette” Dee Durfee passed away peacefully at Pomperaug Woods in Southbury, CT on September 7, 2020. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Miller Durfee. Together they provided a loving and nurturing home for their children and grandchildren throughout their 54 years of marriage. Born in 1930, Bette grew up in Hartford, CT. She attended Bristol High School and went on to work at Traveler’s Insurance Co. Once she married in 1951, they lived in Watertown, CT and after the birth of their 2nd child, they moved to Woodbury, CT in 1955.
Bette always placed other people‘s needs ahead of her own. Her kindness and compassion was directed towards everyone she met. Those who had the privilege of meeting her, quickly became aware of the impact she had on making her community a better place to live.
Bette’s love of nature led her to volunteer tirelessly with Flander’s Nature Center in Woodbury. For many years, she helped raise money, taught school children to appreciate nature’s beauty and gave tours. She was involved with the Pomperaug Valley Garden Club for 33 years. She loved arranging flowers in a relaxed and flowing manner. She made beautiful wreaths that decorated the town of Woodbury for many holiday seasons. She loved combing the beach for sea glass and shells in Madison, CT.
She was an avid knitter and took on projects from sweaters to Christmas stockings to caps for newborns as donations in hospitals. She was introduced to tennis and platform tennis when she married. She grew to love the games which sparked her competitive spirit. She enjoyed board games, particularly backgammon which she made sure to teach all of her grandchildren.
