Earl Gershenow Obituary

Earl Aaron Gershenow, who was born in Easton, Pennsylvania on March 12, 1940, to Louis and Esther Gershenow died on June 13, 2022 in his sleep at his home in Oxford, Connecticut.

His family moved around a lot as his father was a career military officer.  As an Army brat, Earl attended 15 schools in 12 years, including one in the Philippines.  So, he was happy to settle in for four years at Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania, where he majored in political science and Russian area studies.  As an undergraduate, Earl was a member of the Lions Paw Senior Society, Membership in the Society is the highest honor accorded to an undergraduate student at the university.

Following college graduation, he enrolled in Rutgers University Law School in Newark, New Jersey, where he received his LLB (J.D,) in1965.   Earl was admitted to the District of Columbia and Maryland Bars.  His law career included a four-year stint in the United States Army first with the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps and then as an Assistant Judge Advocate, U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps.  Following his military service, he joined the D.C. government as a litigator in the Appellate Division, where he remained for five years.  This was followed by 25 years as a litigator in the Enforcement Division of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.  After retiring from the government, Earl went to work for the Human Growth Foundation as their webmaster and list administrator, where he remained for approximately twelve years.

His professional memberships included: Member, Board of Directors of the Human Growth Foundation; Member, The Endocrine Society; and Member, American Health Lawyers Association

He took great pleasure in helping people.  This started as a child when he would take pennies from his grandma’s purse and distribute them to his friends.  As an adult he designed a software system for the temple in Maryland where he belonged; helped neighbors with lawn work and computer problems; and counseled and advocated for children and adults with disorders of growth, growth hormone, and related endocrine and medical insurance issues.  He was devoted to his family, and was always there to fix something, lend tools, or make a financial contribution where needed.

Earl loved animals and had a special way with them.  He adored his own dogs, and also all kinds of creatures.  He once coaxed a very shy, new to the San Diego Zoo, warthog out of her hut and up to the fence where he talked to her.  At the same zoo he had a five-minute conversational interchange with a panther.

Earl leaves behind his loving wife, Rochelle, of 41 years, his two sons, Alexander Gershenow and Eric Gershenow (Mariangela Saavedra), his two stepdaughters, Francine Cohen (Jacob Kessler) and Rebecca Samberg (Sean), and three grandchildren, Halin, Paul, and Bennett.  His parents and sister predeceased him.

A private graveside funeral will be held in New Jersey.

Shiva Minyanim will be held on Monday, June 20 and Tuesday, June 21 at 7 PM at the Gershenow residence. Please call the Funeral Home for more information.
