Christine Granskog Obituary

Christine Granskog, (née Anne-Cristina Friberg) 81, of Southbury, CT, passed away suddenly but peacefully on June 15th, 2022, and into the arms of God.

Christine was born on July 16th, 1940, to William and Violet (Siren) Laine-Friberg in the Bronx, NY. She grew up on Gleason Ave in the Castle Hill neighborhood of her beloved Bronx.  Her family immigrated from Karelia and Åland in Finland and spoke Finnish at home. She graduated from the all-girls Walton High School in the Bronx and later worked as a secretary.  She enjoyed spending time with friends at several Finnish social clubs and even won the title of Miss Finland from the Finnish Central Committee in 1960. Christine met her future husband, Bengt Granskog, while dancing at the Manhem Beach Club in the Bronx.  They sashayed their way to marriage on May 6th, 1967. They settled in Norwalk, CT, and had their son Erik in 1968 and then their daughter, Lisa, in 1969.

The young family moved to Redding, CT, in 1970 and resided there for over 30 years.  Bengt grew his construction business while Christine served as its business manager and accountant.  Christine was a strong and supportive wife and mother who was never quick to judge or place unrealistic expectations upon her family or friends.  To her three grandchildren, she was known as “Grandma” and “Farmor,” respectively.  She showed amazing resilience and adaptability after her stroke 12 years ago. With the everlasting love and devoted support from her husband of 55 years, Christine was determined not to let her mobility challenges limit or define her. She quickly embraced the internet and even dabbled in social media, inadvertently sending an occasional dancing baby or cat video to family and friends.  She was never far from her Kindle and loved to laugh until she cried. She especially loved her three grandchildren and enjoyed following their many talents and pursuits.

Kiitos, Christine, Rakastan sinua ikuisesti (we love you forever)!

Christine was predeceased by her parents and sister, Ginny Karlson. She is survived by her loving husband Bengt, her children Erik (Jennifer)Granskog and Lisa (Lindsey) Munger, and her three grandchildren, Tyler, Dylan Munger, and Peper Granskog.  A celebration of life will be held at Heritage Village in Southbury, CT, on Sunday, June 26th, 2022 from 1:00 pm.  For details, please contact Erik Granskog at ejgransk@yahoo.com or 617-515-7204.
