Woodbury-
Charlie passed quietly at home in Woodbury on Wednesday, April 19th at the age of 92.
Born in Port Townsend, WA, Charlie graduated from the University of Oregon after spending eight months as an artillery officer for the US Army during the Korean War (1952-53). He also studied at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and earned a degree in mechanical engineering at Columbia University in 1958. Charlie began his career at Bridgeport Brass, then became executive Vice President and part-owner of Norton Murphy International in New Jersey. Charlie lived in New York City before moving to Woodbury, CT and marrying Abby Richmond in 1973.
Charlie was a member of the California Pioneers, an avid military collector (specializing in WWI aviation) who often showed his 1943 Willis Military Jeep at car shows throughout New England. He was also a sailor (American Yacht Club member & sailing judge 1972 Olympics) and skier (Mt Mansfield Ski & Snowboard Club, St Anton/Alberg Ski Club, and active Federation Internationale de Ski member). Charlie loved caring for his historic home & property, was a voracious reader, and had a passion for his golden retrievers- mostly named ‘Charlie’.
Son of Charles Arata Grondona and Helen Anderson Grondona, Charlie is survived by his sisters, Nancy Grondona Richards (Rye, NY) and Susan Grondona Dolge (Savannah, GA); niece Elizabeth Dolge, his stepchildren, Lisa Osur and Victor Petroni; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Charlie is predeceased by his wife Abby Richmond Grondona.
