Bethlehem- Barbara Jean (Smalley) Verrastro of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully at Sheridan Woods in Bristol on November 24, 2020, after a long illness. She was the loving wife of the late Salvatore Verrastro.
Barbara was born on June 21, 1930 in Anne Arbor, Michigan to the late Harriet (Metcalf) Smalley and George Smalley. Barbara attended Bryant College in Providence, RI, where she met the love of her life Salvatore Verrastro. Barbara was employed by the Watertown Board of Education, first at Watertown High School, and then at the BOE offices at the Munson House. After her retirement, she was very involved in the senior scene at North Purchase and the Bethlehem Senior committee. She also was a volunteer at Waterbury hospital for many years. Barbara always enjoyed hiking forest trails and long walks at the ocean, collecting shells and rocks.
Besides her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband Salvatore, her siblings, James Smalley, Martha Royal, and Edward Smalley. Also, her son, Thomas Verrastro. She is survived by her sons, James (Debbie), Nicholas (Sloane), and Joseph (Lori), and her daughter in law, Margaret Verrastro; her grandchildren, Joseph, Jason, Justin, Christopher, Katie, Matthew, Nicholas, and Molly as well as, her great grandchildren, Madeline, Joseph, Alexander, and Aria.
Our family would like to thank all of the caring staff at the Watertown Convalarium for the wonderful care they had given Barbara for the last six and a half years. You are all great!
