Amy Young Obituary

Amy Gibson Young, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 27th, at Sheriden Woods
Health Care Center, Bristol.
Daughter of the late Irene Hallaway Gibson and Lee Woods Gibson, Amy was born August
19,1922, in Bethlehem.
Amy leaves her son Richard and his wife Nancy; her grandson James and his wife Priscilla; and
three great-grandchildren, Henry, Colin and Ava, all of Scituate, Massachusetts.
She also is survived by her nieces, Donna Gibson Erickson and her husband Matthew of
Naugatuck, and Barbara Gibson Valenti of Southbury; her nephew, Scott Gibson and his wife
Tracey of Maiden, N.C.; great-nieces and great-nephews Matthew and Caitlin Erickson; Joseph
Valenti Jr., and his wife Kimberley; Christina Valenti; Hayley and Makenzie Gibson; and great-
great-niece and nephew, McKenna and Cale Erickson.
Her brother Horace Gibson, and his wife Joy of Woodbury; and her brother Donald Gibson of
Southbury, predeceased Amy.
Smart, creative, and inquisitive, Amy was strong, independent, and entrepreneurial long before
those traits were appreciated in women … and she was the embodiment of a “people person.”
She loved gathering new friends, who quickly became lifelong friends; above all, she cherished
her family.
A talented artist, Amy wrote insightful poems and short stories, and delighted in any opportunity
to entertain children with her fanciful tales. And, for more than four decades, she chose
professional and long-term volunteer activities that fulfilled her desire to help others—especially
young people—always taking on leadership roles.
Beginning in her 50s, Amy attended classes at several local colleges; got a modeling certificate;
and acted in many theater productions at Mattatuck Community College. She also began
travelling all over New England photographing historic and notable locations, creating dozens of
slide shows that she presented at churches and community organizations.
Described by her grandson as “an audio-visual storyteller,” Amy maintained this remarkable
lifestyle into her 80s.
The family is grateful to the staff at Sheriden Woods for their compassionate, dedicated care
during Amy’s residence there.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday April 21, 2018, at 1:00 p.m., graveside at Bethlehem Cemetery.
