Watertown- Althea Evelyn (Hicock) McGahie entered Heaven on January 10th, 2022.
She was born in 1931 in Southbury, on the family farm, of which the family home is now Leo’s restaurant, at the junction of Poverty Rd. and Main St. You can still see the original fireplace where the family gathered, in the dining room of Leo’s.
She is a direct descendant of the original settlers to arrive on the Connecticut shoreline in the late 1600’s. All of whom lived their lives in the Southbury/Woodbury area.
Althea was one of nine children born to the late Evelyn and Ely P. Hicock of Southbury. She was educated in the Bullet Hill, White Oak, and Consolidated Schools. She graduated from Woodbury High School and Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing in 1952.
As a longtime and cherished member of United Church of Christ in Southbury, Althea was active in many committees, including the annual Bazaar (baked goods table), the daily welcome letterboard, and one of her favorites, the “stuff-its” every Thursday. She could always be counted on to provide 3 dozen boiled eggs for funeral receptions at the church. (Even at 90, she was still boiling eggs!) You could always count on seeing Althea in and around the church office.
She was a Registered Nurse for over 30 years at Waterbury Hospital and retired in 1997. She also enjoyed being a Docent at Bullet Hill School, contributing to the Southbury Historical Society and delivering for Meals on Wheels every Monday for over 15 yrs. A Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader and a member of the Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.
Althea is survived by daughter, Jennifer Ayers (Steven) of Watertown, Paul McGahie (Jeanne) of Troy, Al, and Alan McGahie (Donna) of Gainesville GA. She is also survived by her sisters, Jane Stone of Niceville,FL, and Julia Steinis of Oxford, CT. She also is survived by 6 Granddaughters, and many great grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by infant grandson, Mitchell Ayers, and siblings, Rachel Stillings, Priscilla Shoeffler, Thalia Scoville, Amos Hicock, Charles Hicock, and Ely Hicock Jr.
Due to Covid restrictions at United Church of Christ, calling hours and service will be held at her daughter’s place of worship.
Calling hours will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 8 Maple St, Terryville, CT on Saturday, January 15, 2022 from 10:30 until the service of Christian Burial at 12 pm. Reception and remembrance to follow in the social hall.
