Allan Sanford Root, 91, of Woodbury passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at River Glen in Southbury, CT. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Rhoades Root. Allan was born June 18, 1928 in Waterbury, CT., the son of Herbert Samuel Root and Ruth Fuller Smith Root.
Allan grew up in Bethlehem, CT. He went to Bethlehem Elementary School and graduated high school from Hemingway High in Watertown, CT., where he participated in many sports. He went to college in Pennsylvania and was a long time member of Christ Church in Bethlehem. Allan was a proud Army veteran of WWII where served as a military police officer in Japan and Germany.
Allan went on to work for Woodbury Telephone Company, for Parmelee Brothers as a milkman, White Supply as a tool salesman, A & B Sales a power tool company that he co-owned with his wife Betty and he ran and taught bridge games locally. Lastly, Allan was a school bus driver for Regional District 14 for children with special needs, the children enjoyed the classical music he played on the bus along with how kind he was.
In his spare time Allan volunteered with the Little League, Babe Ruth and as a T Ball coach. He was an avid bird watcher, he and his wife Betty participated in the annual bird and hawk migration counts. He loved playing and watching sports, playing bridge, bird watching, growing vegetables, listening to opera and classical music and fishing and camping with his family while raising his 4 children. He was a singer for the Bethlehem based The Catch and Madrigals group and they gave many a concert in local churches and he sang barbershop quartets too. Allan and his wife, Betty enjoyed traveling on cruises where they ran bridge games. He enjoyed genealogy and was a direct descendant of Dr Samuel Fuller of The Mayflower.
Above all Allan loved his family, especially his late wife, his children and grandchildren. Allan leaves to cherish his memory his children, Stephen Root and Keith Root of Woodbury, Duane Root of Terryville and Rebecca Root Cross of Bethlehem. He is also survived byhis grandchildren Stephen Root, Nicole Root, Sarah Root, Matthew Root, Brian Root, Michael Lynch and Kelly Morales. Allan was predeceased by his wife, parents and his siblings Samuel Root, Mildred Root Stevens and Virginia Root Shaw.
