WOODBURY - Mr. William Joseph McDermott, 90, died Wednesday, October 31, 2012, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret Louise McDermott.
Mr. McDermott was born May 16, 1922 in New York City, son of the late William Joseph McDermott and Maud Lucille Flannery. He had resided in North Syracuse, N.Y., for 30 years, and had resided in the Woodbury area since 1982. After graduating Seton Hall Preparatory he enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine, United States Naval Reserve in 1942. He served in all three war theaters during World War II including fighting at Normandy Beach on D-Day. He was honorably discharged in 1946 having achieved the rank of Lt. Commander, U.S.N.R. In 1948 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and Chief Engineer's License at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.
Following his distinguished service in the Military, Mr. McDermott worked for the General Electric Company and for Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation in upstate New York as a System Operations Engineer.
Besides being a loving and devoted son, father, brother, husband and grandfather, Mr. McDermott was an avid clock maker and collector. He enjoyed sports and swam one mile every day at the Naugatuck Y.M.C.A. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was from the best generation and was kind in spirit. Everyone who knew him loved this incredible man.
He leaves behind a son, William J. McDermott Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Anne Schack of New York City, N.Y., two grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Schack and Joseph Bridgman Schack; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters and one brother, Lucille Kane, Jean Muller, Nancy Ford, Mary Hewitt, Marilyn McDermott, and John McDermott.

Services: A funeral blessing will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, November 10, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Chapel, Hawthorne, N.Y. Burial will follow.
Visitation: Friends may call the Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 2 School Street, Woodbury, CT on Friday November 9, from 5 to 7p.m.
