Obituary

William (Bill) Frederick Waananen, 83, of Newtown, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Union City, New Jersey, Bill was the son of the late Frederick and Christine Waananen.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Patricia Waananen, and their daughters: Amy Roman and Janis (Sean) Flynn, both of Newtown, Connecticut. Bill was a cherished grandfather to four grandchildren: Alexander, Aron, Robert and Kaitlyn.

Bill's journey began with humble roots, taking on his first job as a paperboy in his early teens. With steadfast dedication and the unwavering support of his wife, Pat, he embarked on a decades-long career at IBM. Starting with a toolbelt in hand, repairing typewriters, Bill rose through the ranks to become an internal educator, mentoring and training future executives. His work took him and his family across New York, Ohio, and eventually to Connecticut, earning respect and admiration from his colleagues and team members at every step.

In retirement, Bill pursued management consulting, sharing his expertise with executives worldwide. A captivating speaker known for his energy and charisma, he presented to leaders across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, always savoring the chance to explore and understand different cultures.

Bill enjoyed the game of pickleball or a round of golf. He enjoyed listening to good music and was always up for a poker game. He cherished the time spent with family vacationing at the Jersey Shore in Summer.

Despite his accomplished career, Bill's greatest legacy was as a husband, father, and grandfather. He will be fondly remembered for the cherished Christmas treasure hunts he created; a beloved tradition carried on with his grandchildren. His warmth and presence will be deeply missed, especially during the holiday season.
