Vivian Louise Chandler (Bell) (Tuttle) Billing,102, of Hawthorne Ave. died January 3, 2009 at Hewitt Memorial in Shelton. She was the wife of the late John W. Billing. Mrs. Billing was born September 4, 1906 in Brockton, MA, daughter of the late Vivian Cleveland "John or Jackie" and Abbie (Sampson) Bell.
Her families' lineage was descended from many Mayflower families, including Sampson, Bradford, Standish, Alden & Hopkins. She attended schools in Brockton, MA, Orange and Milford, CT.
Mrs. Billing had worked at General Electric Company in Bridgeport as a supervisor and union representative, retiring after 25 years. Later she worked at the National School Studio in Derby. She had also worked at the JC Penney Store, Derby branch, with the distinction of being the only employee who worked there when the store originally opened, and was still working there years later when the store closed its doors. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross in Ansonia, and was a member of the Derby United Methodist Church and sang in its' choir until she was 95 years old. She also made dolls to supplement her retirement income.
Vivian will be remembered for her love of ice cream. When her children were growing up, they would make homemade ice cream every weekend, sometimes experimenting with the flavors. She always said you are never too full for ice cream, it just slides down. She will also be remembered for her great sense of determination. She set a goal to live to be 100 and she did it! Although she would later say it wasn't as much fun as she thought it would be. When she wanted to do something, she would find a way a way to get it done.
