Obituary

Virginia Louise Roy was born on October 12, 1918 in Lubbock, Texas. She was the daughter of Charles Clayton Roy and Mary Katherine Roy (nee Faulk). The family moved to New York, where Virginia graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1935 at the age of 16. She attended Brooklyn College until March 1938 when she left to take a job at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, working there for 3 ½ years. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, she took a 6 week course at Stevens Institute of Technology and secured a job at Bell Laboratories. She married Sherburne F. Barber on April 8, 1944 at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD living there until the end of WWII, when they moved to Queens Village, NY. Sons John and David were born in 1947 and 1949, respectively. Later they moved to St. James, NY where son Andrew was born in 1957.
In 1958 Virginia decided to finish college; by commuting four summers and taking transferable courses. She graduated in 1962 from Brooklyn College. After working at Stony Brook University Library and Smithtown Library she was awarded a scholarship to C.W. Post Library School. After commuting three years, she was granted her MLS in Library Science, and worked as a Librarian at Smithtown Library until 1972.
Virginia and Sherburne became residents of East Hill Woods (Watermark) in Southbury, CT in 1996.
Virginia, age 95, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Waterbury Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Sherburne F. Barber, Professor Emeritus of City College of New York. Surviving family members are her three sons, John (Susan), David (Joyce) and Andrew (Linda), five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
