Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Veronica Therese Gendron announce her passing on January 7, 2025, at the age of 93. Veronica was born on September 4, 1931, in the Wan Chai District of Hong Kong.

As a young girl, Veronica endured the occupation of her home port city by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Unbeknownst to Veronica, while her home was being occupied during the war, a young Canadian-born sailor and newly naturalized U.S. citizen named Harold Robert Gendron began to serve his new country in the war's Pacific Theater.

Nearly a decade later, the two would meet when Harold's ship was at port in Hong Kong. What followed was a long-distance romance that led to their engagement and marriage in March 1958. Later that year, Veronica joined her husband in California, where he was stationed at a naval base, and they eventually bought a home together in Sunnyvale, California, through a GI Bill loan. In 1959, they welcomed a son, Christopher, and nearly 4 years later, a daughter, Mary.

In 1965, Veronica became a naturalized U.S. citizen—something that would always be a great source of pride for her. She lost her husband Harold to complications from heart disease after nearly 40 years of marriage, and in 2000 bravely moved across the country to Connecticut—a place she'd never been to before—with her daughter and her family. She lived in New Milford for many years and more recently in Southbury.

Veronica liked a good morning cup of tea, sentimental songs, classic movies, and beautiful natural scenery, but more than anything, she loved and was devoted to her children and grandchildren and selflessly thought of their needs above her own.

She was a kind and quiet presence who had a gift for making other people feel appreciated and valued. She is survived by her son Christopher and daughter Mary; her son-in-law Andrew and daughter-in-law Denise; her grandchildren Caitlin, Logan, Melissa, and Trevor; and nine great-grandchildren.
