Thomas Edward O’Connell passed away on December 26, 2025, at the age of 78. Born in Englewood, New Jersey, he was a long-time resident of Roxbury, Connecticut.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Lorraine O’Connell, whom he married in 1977; his daughter, Kathryn Kelly O’Connell; his son, Justin O’Connell and his Daughter-In-Law Leanne O'Connell; his mother, Naomi O’Connell; and his sister, Maureen Jacobson. He was preceded in death by his father, John O’Connell.
Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserve, attaining the rank of Captain and serving during the Vietnam-era period. He entered military service in 1970 and was honorably discharged in 1978.
Tom possessed a natural curiosity and a remarkable talent for making sense of numbers. That gift led him to a long and successful career at IBM, where he served in various financial roles including budgeting and forecasting. He was admired not only for his expertise, but for his integrity, reliability, and his unique ability to help others understand the “big picture.” Over the years, he formed many lasting friendships and became known as someone you could always count on.
Tom favorite activities included watching his son Justin’s baseball games, singing karaoke with his daughter kelly and playing cards with his family and friends. A true jokester and the life of the party, Tom had a quick wit and a perfectly timed one-liner that could lighten any room. His gentle humor and warm spirit made the days brighter for those around him.
Tom had a deep love for animals, especially his cherished German Shepherd, DejaVu, who was his constant and loyal companion.
He was also a dedicated partner to his wife on their miniature horse farm, Crystal Ridge Farm where they raised championship level miniature horses since 1989. The farm’s successful breeding program earned more than 100 AMHA Top Ten Awards and more than 10 AMHA World Championships. Tom also proudly served as president of the New England Miniature Horse Society that covered Connecticut, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and New Jersey. He also served as Treasurer of the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) for four years, and later as Vice President.
After retiring, Tom continued his lifelong commitment to service by proudly serving with the Roxbury Volunteer Firefighters, giving his time and heart to protect his community.
