Obituary

Shirley Judson Morgan died on October 31, 2014 at the Lutheran Home, in Southbury, CT. She was the loving wife of the late Addis William "Bud" Morgan, her husband of 66 years. She was 89 years old.

Shirley was born in Waterbury Hospital on January 22, 1925. She was the only child of Leman Bishop & Hazel Louise (Parmelee) Judson. She was raised in Watertown, CT and attended local schools, graduating from Watertown High School in 1943 where she studied business. She was a proud descendant of Lt. Joseph Judson, one of the original settlers of Woodbury.

During her school years Shirley was active in sports, glee club, and Girl Scouts. As a member of 4-H, she particularly enjoyed learning how to bake and garden, which she made great use of in later years. Shirley was the recipient of the DAR Good Citizenship Award in the 1940's.

In high school, during WWII, Shirley worked for the Watertown Congregational Church writing letters to the servicemen. Upon graduation she worked for the Oakville Division of Scovill Mfg. Co., where she met Bud.

Soon after their marriage in 1947, Shirley and Bud built their home on Main St. (North) in Woodbury. Shirley enjoyed being a full-time housewife and mother, while volunteering in her free time as a Sunday School teacher, Boy Scout Den Mother, Asst. Girl Scout Leader, member of the Woodbury Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary, and Secretary of the Woodbury Visiting Nurse Assoc. As a Director of the Bethlehem Fair Association, Shirley enjoyed working at the refreshment stand for many years. She also enjoyed volunteering for Mitchell School as Dot Bartlett's assistant during Eye-testing time.

Shirley made a lifetime out of being active and doing for others, including being full-time caregiver for her mother, and babysitter for all of her grandchildren. She loved to dance, bowl and spend time in her backyard working and swimming with the family. She also enjoyed many years of motor-boating and waterskiing at the family's cottage on Bantam Lake. Once their grandchildren were in school, Shirley and Bud became loyal Nonnewaug High School sports enthusiasts. They were also avid Boston Red Sox and UCONN Huskies fans.

Shirley is survived by a son, Tom Morgan & his wife, Sherry, of Watertown, CT; a daughter, Janice Morgan Scruggs & her husband Willie Nininger, of Woodbury, CT; Six grandchildren, Jennifer Morgan Jackson and her husband Grant; Jessica Morgan Kerchner and her husband, Charles; Tori Scott Losh and her husband, Michael; Lee Morgan, Ian Scruggs and Dan Morgan, and five great-granddaughters, Kaylee Jackson, Emma Jackson, Olivia Kerchner, Penelope Losh and Charlotte Kerchner.
