IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley
Martin
November 5, 1930 – November 29, 2014
Southbury, CT - Shirley Anne Bernard Martin, 84, of Ichabod Road died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on November 29, 2014.
Shirley was born on November 5, 1930 in Southbridge, Massachusetts; daughter of the late Victor E. Bernard and Mildred E. Hanson.
Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and teacher and throughout her life, gave of herself for the benefit of others. She loved her family. For many years, Shirley served as a foster mother and brought over 40 infant children into her home to care for them while they awaited parents. She was very active in the PTO and in school and community affairs and was a relentless advocate for those who were struggling and stood in need. One of her most notable efforts was establishing and running the Community Thrift Store with her longtime friend Dorrie Johnson. Through hard work and community generosity the Thrift Store donated thousands upon thousands of dollars to families in need, to school, social service and community programs. A significant portion of the Thrift Stores earnings were directed to Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury, where women facing domestic abuse could turn for loving assistance. That was Shirley's legacy, a kind heart always finding opportunities to serve others.
Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband Frederic R. Martin, son Randy and granddaughter Jessica Martin. She is survived by two children, Scott F. Martin and his wife Robinette of Southbury and Caroline Martin of Winsted; her grandchildren Rebecca and her husband Alvin Williams of Southbury, Matthew Martin and his wife Lisa of Rexburg, Idaho, Ryan Martin of Winsted and Johanna and her husband Chris Bunker of Southbury; Her great-grandchildren Brody, Ava, Declan and Callan Williams of Southbury and Alek Martin of Idaho. She is also survived by two sisters, Carol Lemoine of West Palm Beach, Florida and Judith Booth of Wrentham, MA.
