Obituary

Selma D. Halperin, born August 10, 1918, of Hillsboro Beach, Forida passed away on January 17, 2016. Mrs. Halperin was pre-deceased by Joseph Halperin, her husband of 58 years. She is survived by four children: Randee Berliner and husband Martin of Ft Lauderdale, Florida and New London, Connecticut; Fred Halperin and wife Julie of Lake Conroe, Texas; Atty. Susan Halperin of Hartford, Connecticut and Charlestown, Rhode Island, and Melinda Kodz and husband Daniel of Woodbury, Connecticut, with whom she lived every summer. She is survived by grandchildren Marc and Wendy Berliner of Westwood, Massachusetts; Elise and Scott Butson of East Hampton, Connecticut; Joshua and Carolyn Halperin of San Antonio, Texas; Russell Halperin of Austin, Texas, and Aaron Kodz of New York, New York. She was pre-deceased by grandson Adam Halperin of Houston, Texas and two granddaughters-in-law, Carol-Lin Halperin of Houston and Marian Halperin of Austin. Her great-grandchildren include Texans Geoffrey, Ashley-Linn, and Alyssa Halperin; Rachel and Jacob Berliner of Massachusetts, and Lilah and Ephraim Butson of Connecticut. She had a very special relationship with grandson Aaron's friend Farideh Rezagah and the Kodz family pet, Pepper, a gentle and loving cocker spaniel who seldom left Selma's side when they were together.

Mrs. Halperin was born in the Bronx, New York. She was married in 1940. The family moved to Waterbury, CT in 1941. In 1946, they purchased the family home in Cheshire, CT. They moved to Hillsboro Beach in 1989. She managed their real estate and insurance business in Waterbury and was a licensed real estate agent from 1956 until 1989. She was a lifetime member of the American Cancer Society where she and Mr. Halperin served in a number of leadership positions over more than 25 years.

Mrs. Halperin loved to be among people, and enjoyed sharing stories. Even in her last days--despite her petite frame and her declining health--she would manage to climb onto a barstool and engage in lively conversation with friend and stranger alike. She was a classy, sassy lady always quoting the wisdom of her mother and her aunts--and telling everyone she met to enjoy life. 'Just Do It'! She was an inspiration to all.

The family would like to thank her aide (and fast friend), Claudette, for her loving care and attention while she was in Woodbury.
