Sandra M.
Slater
February 13, 1942 – May 4, 2026
Sandra Slater, born on February 13, 1942, in Paterson, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Sandra was the devoted wife of Joseph Hochheiser and a proud and loving mother to David Bachman (Ashley Bachman) and Joseph Pickman (Vanny Kong), Felicia Hochheiser (Bill Golodner) and Deborah DeFanti (Joseph DeFanti). Her greatest joy was being “Nana” to Daniel, Casey, Ruby, Leo, and Nicholas, who were the light of her life.
A bright and compassionate soul, Sandra dedicated her life to helping others. She earned her Master’s degree in Nursing from Yale University and spent her career advocating for and supporting women’s rights, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. Her work reflected not only her intelligence but her deep sense of justice and empathy.
Sandra was an active and valued member of the Jewish communities in Hamden, Toronto, and Southbury, where she built meaningful connections and contributed her time and spirit generously. She had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen and welcomed, approaching every person with curiosity, kindness. She was inclusive by nature, engaging effortlessly with people of all ages and backgrounds.
She found simple joy in life’s pleasures, especially time spent at the beach and eating fried clams (the one thing she would not share). Above all, Sandra lived for her family, particularly her grandchildren, whose lives she enriched with her unconditional love, warmth, and presence.
Sandra will be remembered as a joyful, inquisitive, and deeply kind person whose love knew no bounds. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and the family she adored.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sandy’s memory to Planned Parenthood or to B’nai Israel in Southbury.
