Sam Green, III, longtime resident of Southbury died Sunday June 16, 2013 after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. He is the husband for over 58 years to Elinor (Paradis) Green.
Mr. Green was born February 20, 1930 in Rochester, NY son of the late Samuel and Dorothy (Effrige) Green Jr.
Mr. Green received his education at the Bullet Hill School and the Consolidated School both in Southbury, and graduated Woodbury High School. He did his Post Grad Courses at Bordentown Military Institute in Bordentown NJ and the University Of Connecticut School Of Business where he was a member of Phi Tau Eta Fraternity.
As a young boy he started his military career as a plane spotter. Later in life, he served in the US military, including service in The U.S. Navy from 8/48-8/49 , 12/51-9/53, serving in the Korean War on the Air Craft Carrier Kearsarge CV33.
Moving to Southbury in 1939, he was a dedicated resident of Southbury where he held various positions in the community throughout his lifetime, some including the Republican Town Committee Southbury, acting as the Town's First Selectman from 1967-1969, serving as the Chairman of the Southbury Republican Town Committee, he was past Commander of Post 1607 VFW; where he developed a relationship with other veterans whose camaraderie meant the world to him. He was a Member of Memorial Day Parade Committee, worked with the Town of Southbury Registrar of Voters, was a director of the Woodbury Telephone Co, was a Member of Financial part of Tercentennial Conn. in 1973, and was a Member of the Southbury Arts Council from 1971-1972.
He also was a was a Member of C.D. Rescue Squad , was a Member of American Federation of Police from 1967-1968, was a Member of The American Judicature Society in 1962, was a member of the New London Historical Society and had acted as Notary of Public Since 1968.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ for over 50 years where he had served in the past as Chairman of the Church Council.
A salesman most of his life, Mr. Green's career included working locally for many businesses, including working at the Vibo Farms for Victor Borge in Southbury, working at the Fuller Brush Company in New Milford, Waterbury area and in Hartford, working at the Old Hundred Ice Cream Co. and Inn in Southbury, working at Greens Store in Southbury, Pioneer Automobile in Watertown, Carl & Walt Chevrolet in Woodbury, Don Heavens Chevrolet in Woodbury, Erhardt Chevrolet in Danbury and at West Chevrolet in Woodbury.
Mr. Green spent a lot of time researching the Green Family History in New London Ct and in Southbury, as his family was the most important thing in his life.
Besides his beloved wife he is survived by his daughters Donna M Sharp of Florida, Michele Green Melton of Paris Tennessee, Lisa Mary Green of Middlebury Ct, a sister Marilyn Talarico
and a brother Frederick Green, both of Florida, his Grandchildren Michael Sharp, Jason Sharp, Samuel Clay Melton, Quinn Talin, and Gage James.

He was preceded in death by his Son Timothy Thomas Green, and daughter Kathleen Ann Green James, and his sisters, Mary Steward and Dorothy Manville.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Southbury Land Trust, POB 600, or to the VFW Post # 1607, 272 Old Woodbury Road, Southbury CT 06488.

Cemetery: Pine Hill Cemetery

Location: Munson-Lovetere Southbury

Funeral: United Church of Christ

Services: A funeral service will be held on Saturday June 22, 2013 at 1 pm at the United Church of Christ, 283 Main Street North. Burial with full military honors will be held in the Pine Hill cemetery, Southbury.

Visitation: Calling hours are at the Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main Street North on Friday June 21, 2013 from 5 to 8 pm.
