Ruth Frances Moore, 100, of Southbury passed away on August 12, 2014 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Luther Franklin Moore, Sr. and Katharine Moore. Born April 7, 1914 in Norwood, Massachusetts, the third of four children, she attended Simmons College but received her B. Ed from a Massachusetts Teacher's College, her M. Ed from Boston University, and acquired credits to complete a 6th year.
She taught school in Lexington, Massachusetts and Darien, Connecticut retiring in 1975 from the Darien school, where she had worked as a teacher, and served as an interim principal and assistant principal. She moved to Heritage Village in August 1975.
She loved to travel and made many trips to Europe, particularly England. She took 2 months one year and travelled around the world, spending 3 weeks of it in Japan. She also travelled widely throughout the United States and to Central America.
After moving into Heritage Village, she was active in condo affairs, serving on condo boards in various capacities, and for a time (7 years) as chairman of the Ponds and Streams Committee. She was also active outside the town of Southbury, particularly in a chapter of National Audubon, which she guided through its early years as president and in many other capacities. She also served on the Town Conservation Committee as secretary and did volunteer work at the Community Thrift Shop.
She was predeceased by a brother, Luther Franklin Moore, Jr., and two sisters, Louise Walls and Marion (Sue) Spencer. She leaves a nephew, Mark Moore, a Public Interest attorney and retired Episcopal priest from Milford, and a niece, Florence Shaffer, a social worker from Wellesley, Massachusetts, as well as 2 grand nieces, Rebecca Moore and Victoria Shaffer, and a grand nephew, Jeremy Shaffer.
