Obituary

Robert Platt Ulin

Robert "Bob" Ulin, brilliant student, WWII veteran, heralded economist and beloved family member, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2020 at his home at Pomperaug Woods in Southbury, CT. He was 98 years old.

Born on May 7, 1922, Bob was raised in Brookline, MA. He graduated from Harvard, summa cum laude, '43, and Harvard Business School, Feb. '47. His MBA studies were interrupted by the war where, serving in the US Army, he participated in the invasions of Guam and Saipan.

Bob served for many years as Chief Economist and advisor to the Board Chairman of Mobil Oil, a member of the Economic Advisory Board to the Secretary of Commerce, SVP and Chief Economist of the Bank of New York, and member of the National Association of Business Economists. In retirement, he wrote a forecast column for Eikoff Economics' newsletter and, earlier in his career, managed Business Week's renowned annual survey, Business Plans for Investment in Plant and Equipment.

Bob loved the outdoors, enjoying hikes in the woods, walking his dogs, and birdwatching. He was a lifelong member of the Audubon Society. Bob also loved baseball, likening the game to a metaphor for life.

Bob was a resident of Stamford, CT, with his late wife Marcia Barnet Ulin. He later lived for many years in Southbury, CT—in Heritage Village and Pomperaug Woods—with his companion, the late Marcia Klau.

Bob leaves a brother, Walter Ulin, and sister-in-law Carole Ulin, of Sarasota, FL. He was the beloved uncle of their children, Wendy and Jonathan Linden and Jeffrey and Eve Ulin. He also had a loving relationship with his grandnephews, Joshua and Matthew Linden and Charles and Edward (Teddy) Ulin. Bob was predeceased by his brother, Arnold Ulin.

Contributions in Bob's memory are welcomed to (i) the Harvard College Fund at alumni.harvard.edu (please specify the Leo Platt Activities Fund established in honor of Bob's grandfather), (ii) The Bent of the River Audubon Center, of which Bob was a longtime supporter at bentoftheriver.audubon.org, or (iii) Pomperaug Woods, 80 Heritage Rd., Southbury CT 06488.
