Obituary

Robert J. Sanford Sr., 75, of Waterbury, CT, a proud Marine Veteran, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022 from complications of a tragic fall and spinal cord injury.

Robert was predeceased by his parents Albert Sanford  and Sigrid (Solberg) Sanford and sister Joan (Sanford) Latina.

He is survived by his children Susan Sanford (Mike Magaraci), Sandra Sanford (Jennifer Wardwell), Robert James Sanford Jr , their mother Judith Sanford,  his sister, Jean Bosco, and his longtime companion Donna Wuerth. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren MJ Magaraci, Sania Magaraci, Tessie Sanford-Wardwell, and Ishaya Sanford-Wardwell. As well as many nieces and nephews.

Robert was a dedicated father and proud veteran who served as a Marine in Vietnam Company A, 5th Battalion  from 1966-1968. His loyalty and dedication to his country was only eclipsed by his love and loyalty to his family and loved ones. He instilled the Marine Corps values of Honor, Courage and Commitment into his children and was proud to see the attributes reflected in their personal, academic, athletic, and professional endeavors.

He was an avid athlete and Red Sox fan. He spent much of his time as a competitive golfer in leagues at the Pomperaug Golf Course in Southbury. He spoke often and fondly of his golfing buddies as well as many of the people he met at the course over the years.

As a baseball fan, he rooted for the Red Sox and "anyone who beats the Yankees." He played for many years in the Southbury Men's Fastpitch softball league and coached his children throughout their time in Southbury Parks and Recreation softball and Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball. It was a joy for him to still be called "Coach" by many of his former players.

Robert was an electrician by trade and retired from Ansonia Copper and Brass as an electrical engineer.

Bob, RJ, Robbie, Crazy Uncle Robbie, Dad, and Grandpa - Whatever you called Robert,  he had a larger than life personality and seemed invincible to those around him. His enthusiasm for enjoying life and his love of a good time wherever he went and whomever he was with made him someone you wanted to be around. He will be deeply missed but his impact on those he leaves behind is indelible.
