Mr. Robert W. Ensign, passed away peacefully at his home in Bethlehem, surrounded by family on Friday evening September 10th, 2010. He was born on December 3, 1929 to the late William Henry and Elizabeth (Banker) Ensign in North Tarrytown, New York.
In addition to his wife Barbara (Powers) Ensign, he is survived by two sons, William H. Ensign of Norwalk and Robert W. H. Ensign, Jr. and his wife Margaret (Meg) of Washington. He also leaves six grandchildren, Robert W. H. Ensign III, Timothy Ensign, William Ensign, Grace Federle and twins, Elizabeth Grace and Olivia Wade Ensign, two sisters, Patricia De Bree of Essex Junction, VT, (Formerly of Killingworth, Ct) and Joan Bloom and her husband Dr. Barry Bloom of Lyme. He was predeceased by two brothers, William H. Ensign, Jr. and John Banker Ensign, and a daughter in law, Theresa Wilson Ott Ensign. In addition to being survived by many nieces and nephews, he also leaves Teddy (an English Springer Spaniel) and Nell (a German Short Haired Pointer) who have been a symbol of unbending devotion.
Bob attended North Tarrytown High School with a post graduate year at Portsmouth Priory (Abbey) and Cornell University. He spent many years in the petroleum related field and the last twenty five as president of Ensign Petroleum Equipment Company in Norwalk. He was elected by peers to serve on the Board of Directors of PEI (Petroleum Equipment Institute), a trade association whose members manufacture, distribute and service petroleum marketing equipment. He was elected to two terms as a member of the Norwalk Common Council and was chairman of the School Building Committee and member of the Finance Committee. He served as vice president of the Central Catholic Home School Association and Harbor View Beach Club, having lived in Norwalk and Wilton many years before moving to Bethlehem. He is also a member of the Old Bethlem Historical Society. In addition to having been a past president of the Fairfield County Model A Club and a member of the Connecticut Crankin Yanks Model T Club, he enjoyed many years of touring and wonderful friendships.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the VNA Northwest 607 Bantam Rd., Unit F, Bantam 06750, the Bethlehem Ambulance Association PO Box 401, the Old Bethlem Historical Society 4 Main St. North or the Church of the Nativity, 48 East St.
Cemetery: St. John's Cemetery
Location: Munson-Lovetere Woodbury
Services: A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday September 18th at 10am at the Church of the Nativity, East St., Bethlehem, with a reception to follow at the Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, 223 Richard Ave., Norwalk on Saturday at 2pm.
Visitation: A calling hour will take place on Saturday morning at the Church from 9am until the time of service.
