Obituary

Robert F. Clarke, 91, died at home as he wished, in the last hour of Good Friday, April 18, 2025 in the company of his beloved and devoted wife of 69 years Marjorie and his children. Bob, as he was known, led a long, sedulous life but his happiest chapter began when he and Marjorie moved to Woodbury, and he had the time to become deeply involved in his community.

Born in Waterbury to Helene Pearl (Sirois) and Frederick Lincoln Clarke, the eldest of four siblings, Bob received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Connecticut and his Master's degree from Boston University. He began his career as an English teacher before applying his talents in business and later in life pivoted to development and fundraising for private schools. When he retired it was from a joyous association with the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Wilton.

Bob believed in service: the early days of community recycling, the American Cancer Society, within his parishes, A.I.D.S. support, The Thoreau Society, the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce, the Democratic Town Committee, the Woodbury Zoning Committee, the WBCMF and many more. A contrarian for the fun of it, he enjoyed a verbal and mental sparring with anyone who would take him on. For those who enjoyed his sense of humor their backtalk and banter delighted him.

The written word, Democratic principles of fairness, the natural world, good music, and good company fulfilled him. He also enjoyed bacon and a celebratory gin and tonic. Slowing down was hard for him as he wanted to live to be 100 and made a valiant effort. He didn't want to leave the party. The absence of his vigorous presence is deeply felt.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, his sons David, John and Peter, his devoted daughter Elizabeth, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, his brother Don and his wife Pauline of Ocean Gate, NJ, brother Richard and his wife Marsha of New Milford, nieces and nephews including those of his late sister Helen Devin and her husband Russ, formerly of New Milford.

"Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince; and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." ~ Shakespeare
