IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert
Carr
August 29, 1923 – September 12, 2006
Robert Earl Carr, age 83 of Hardwick, MA, passed away suddenly on September 12th, 2006. He is survived by his four loving children, David W. Carr of Leyden, MA, Elise (Carr) Keel of Milton, MA, Robert B. Carr of Brookline, MA and Matthew B. Carr of Hardwick, MA, 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson. Robert was widowed from his beloved wife of 57 years, DeLores Ellen (Strehler) Carr who died on September 14, 2003.
Robert was born in New Castle, PA on August 29th, 1923. After graduating from NECA High School in 1940, where he was the class president and nick-named "man of the people", he completed one year at Drexel University and enrolled in the Signal Corps. During WWII he enlisted in the Army Air Corp where he achieved the rank of Captain as co-pilot, navigator and bombardier, flying B-25 bombers in the China, Burma and India theater. He flew 65 missions receiving a Presidential Citation, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and two Air Medals for uncommon valor.
Upon returning from the war he received his B.S. and M.S. Magna Cum Laude in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He was employed as an engineer, researcher and executive by many well known companies around the country, including Proctor & Gamble, General Electric, Hughes Rectifier [where he became a pioneer in the semiconductor industry], and held various management positions at Stanley Corporation, TiteFlex, Diamond Match and Carr Engineering.
Robert also served as First Selectmen and Police Chief in Bethlehem, CT during the early 1970's as well as holding various teaching positions at Waterbury Technical College.
But more than all of his many life's accomplishments, Robert was a champion of humanity and saw the potential in all those he met. He was a true hero, adventurer and loved life with great enthusiasm right to the end. He will be sorely missed by all of us whose lives he touched...
