Robert Douglas Byers (Bob) passed away peacefully on February 18th 2024 after a brief but fierce battle with lung cancer. Bob battled many demons in his life including type I diabetes, severe Covid and cancer. He fought hard but there are some battles you cannot win.

Bob was born on March 15, 1961 in Boston, MA. He spent all his childhood and young adulthood in Stamford, CT, an area that he loved very much. He graduated from Westhill High School in Stamford and became a licensed plumber with a specialty in wells. He loved his work and took huge pride in all his specialized tools and his Honda truck. He had an active and fun-loving group of friends in Stamford that shared a lot of crazy adventures with him over the years and he stayed in touch with many of them even after he moved to Woodbury in 2001.

Bob was a lover of many things. First, he loved his family, especially his beloved daughter Jaimie Lea Byers of Long Island. He also had a very close relationship with his mom who he lived with in Woodbury, CT for over 20 years and with his two sisters Jeanne and Connie.

Bob was a lover of nature. He hiked and camped on the Appalachian Trail when he was younger and took a school trip to Oregon that he often reminisced about. Bob loved and enjoyed photographing all the animals that wandered through his backyard in Woodbury. He took great pictures of bears, turkeys, foxes, and other critters who liked to check on the backyard bird feeder. He had a pet boa for years. We have pictures of us holding him draped around our necks. His periodic escapes were always an adventure in the house. He loved all dogs and had fond memories of his Black Lab Dallas and of the trio of Golden Retrievers that lived at his sister Jeanne's house over the many years, especially Allison who adored him.

Bob passionately loved music, especially music from the 60's and the 70's. He could identify any band he heard on the radio and seemed to enjoy them all equally. Crosby Stills Nash and Young and Three Dog Night were consistent favorites. He had been to see many of the popular bands in concert with Stamford friends and loved sharing stories of those wild adventures. His other loves included the color purple. He surrounded himself with purple blankets, shirts, and phone cases. He was disappointed when we vetoed purple carpeting in the living room. He also loved a cup of very strong coffee with creamer. He always had a full pot in the kitchen and although we are all coffee lovers, we had to dilute the brew he created! His truck, his motorcycle, his tools, his guitars, and pictures of his daughter were among his favorite possessions.

As Bob's health deteriorated, he led a quieter and more private life. He continued to find joy in his close friend Lucinda Penta of Watertown and in his family. He was a gentle soul who appreciated every kindness that he received. In his almost 63 years of life, he never spoke an unkind word about anyone. He truly saw the good in all of us. Even when he had an argument with someone, he immediately forgave them and excused their actions.

Bob is survived by his brother Edward Byers (Carol) of Milford, Ohio, his sister Jeanne Hawley (Bob) of Woodbury, CT, his sister Connie Adamski (Tom) of Southbury, CT, his daughter Jaimie Byers (Paul) of Long Island, a nephew and four nieces. He is predeceased by his father Dr. Edward Byers and his mother M. Margaret (Peggy) Byers.

He will be missed by all of us, and we will cherish the memories of his Irish smile and Irish curls, his love of a good adventure, his quiet appreciation of life around him and his gratitude and uncomplaining spirit. Special thanks to angels Benter Okuom and Eva Verbickas who helped to care for Bob as his health declined.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Cancer Research Institute, The American Diabetes Association or The Humane Society. A Memorial service will be planned at a later date.

A graveside service will be held Saturday June 8, 2024 10:30 am at New North Cemetery located in Woodbury.
