Obituary

Richard J. Turner of Southbury died December 5th, 2013. Born December 18, 1920 in New York City, he grew up in Nutley, NJ, and prepared for college at the Newman School of Hackensack, NJ. He attended Yale University, where he graduated in 1942, and completed his PhD in organic chemistry in 1946. In 1947, he moved to New Jersey to begin his career in research and development of pharmaceutical and medical drugs and devices at the American Cyanamid Company, working for their Lederle Labs in and Davis & Geck subsidiaries. After 25 years there, he founded Turner Associates with his brother, Robert A. Turner; he continued their consulting after Robert's untimely death in 1973. Since 1963, he has resided with his wife and family in Connecticut, first in Wilton until 1991 when he and his wife moved to Heritage Village in Southbury. An avid golfer all his life, he was club champion of the Plainfield, NJ, Country Club and senior club champion of the Silver Spring Country Club in Ridgefield, CT. He also was an expert bridge player. After his retirement from consulting, he became active in local Southbury matters, becoming a Justice of the Peace, a senior election official, and serving on the Economic Development Commission until 2012, when he moved to assisted living. He leaves his wife of 69 years, Viola Tracy Turner; two daughters, Tracy Turner of New York City, and Carole Turner Reading and her husband, Ron Reading, of Ridgewood, NJ; three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
