IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard
Richman
April 8, 1941 – October 1, 2022
It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mr. Richard "Richie" Richman. Richie died of heart disease on October 1, 2022.
Richie was a talented athlete who excelled in varsity football, baseball, and basketball at Overbrook High School in the late 1950s. He was a starter on the basketball championship team of 1957/58 and his team was voted one of the best high school teams ever in the City of Philadelphia. Three starters from this team played in the NBA.
After graduating from Overbrook, Richie attended Villanova University. At Villanova, he also played three varsity sports: quarterback on the football team, first baseman on the baseball team, and guard on the basketball team. In football, his teams participated in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas in 1961, and the Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia in 1962. After playing in the Liberty Bowl in the afternoon, Richie played in a basketball game that night at the Palestra. That feat has earned him the distinction of being the only major college athlete to participate in two different varsity athletic events on the same day.
Richie played minor league baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies Organization as a first baseman and played professional football in the Continental Football League as a quarterback and receiver. He is listed in four sports Hall of Fame societies: Villanova University, Overbrook High School, Pennsylvania State Philadelphia chapter, and the Jewish Hall of Fame.
For 26 years he built, and ran, a wholesale record distribution company, Richman Brothers, and a retail store chain, Sound Odyssey. Richie was a natural coach in his areas of expertise, taking great pleasure in helping those who asked for his support in business and athletics.
He retired to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where he was an active participant in golf, tennis, and bridge. He always had a smile on his face and a cheery hello for everyone.
Richie will be missed by his friends and family, including wife Roz, children, Evan and Monica, daughter-in-law Daniela, and grandson, Morris.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts honoring Richie can be sent to the Villanova General Athletics Fund or The Weitzman National. Museum of American Jewish History.
