IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard E.
(Dick) Manville Sr
May 8, 1931 – January 8, 2011
Richard E. Dick Manville Sr. passed away on Saturday Jan. 8, 2011, surrounded by his loving family, at Yale New Haven Hospital, after a long illness.
He was Born May 8, 1931 in Waterbury CT, son of the late Charles F. Manville and Anna (Wilson) Manville
Dick was a true Southburian as his parents were both born in Southbury. He
lived his entire life within a mile and a half of the South Britain section of Southbury. His grandfather Axel Harry Wilson built the South Britain Library, the South Britain General Store, and the first bridge on Flood Bridge Road that did not wash away when the river flooded. He attended the one room school in South Britain.
Dick worked hard all his life and loved working outside. He worked for the Town of Southbury Highway Dept., Frank Talarico and Sons, Driscoll Wire, The Silliman Company, and he retired from O&G Industries as a Euclid driver in the quarry. He also worked for himself logging.
He was a veteran, serving in the Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict- on
Staten Island, the Delaware River, and Point Able in the North Atlantic.
He was involved in many community activities to include the Cub Scouts, the
American Field Service (AFS), and the Southbury Fire Department- making the rank of LT.
But he really enjoyed his farm on Manville Mountain. He loved growing his
garden, raising cattle, cutting wood, and getting hay in. He was known for his incredible strength and his large farmer's hands.
Dick enjoyed his leisure time also, hunting and fishing. He loved
dancing especially square dancing and polkas. His grandchildren were a special joy to him- teaching them to drive, hunt, make chocolate chip cookies, raise chickens, and planting a garden.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Green Manville, his sons Richard Jr. and his wife Vicki, Jeffrey and his wife Barbara, and
Duane and his wife Donna, grand children Duane-known to all as Scott, Amber, Linda, Michael, Anna, Jeffrey Jr., and Abigail. He is also survived by his brother C. Floyd Manville and wife Pauline of Oxford, his sister Natalie Talarico and her husband Tom of Watertown, his close friends Jerry Hickman and his wife Jean, and a former AFS student Edgar Klausmann and his wife Imtroud, of Freiberg, West Germany.
