Obituary

Phyllis (Hillman) Dixon, age 103, died peacefully November 20, 2014. Phyllis was born July 5, 1911 in West Sommerville, MA. She grew up in Barre, MA, where her family has lived for many generations, and where her parents owned their house for 75 years. She was the daughter of Arthur Hillman and Della Smith Hillman. She lived in New Canaan, CT for 45 years, taught Home Economics in the New Canaan School system for 20 years, and was a 60 year member of the New Canaan Methodist Church. She graduated from Framingham College, Framingham MA, class of 1932 with a BS degree. In her 40's and 50's, while teaching school, she earned her Master's Degree from UCONN, and her Doctorate from NYU. She has lived at East Hill Woods/Watermark in Southbury, CT for over 20 years, enjoying her time there working in the library, knitting baby blankets for new-borns, doing jig-saw puzzles and crossword puzzles (in ink), and taking part in many activities. She travelled extensively all over the world to at least 25 countries, including several months in India while writing her doctoral thesis. She played the piano and the cello, sang in a large chorus, was deeply involved with the Girl Scouts, was an expert seamstress, and painted in oils. She gave up her car at the age of 99. She is survived by her daughter Roberta Dixon Tyson of Cornwall CT, her son Roy Dixon of Northern CA, her grandchildren Lynn Dixon and her son Jeremy, Lise Caldwell, her husband Shan and their sons Jack and Will, Laura Tyson and her husband Richard Li and their daughters Sienna and Isabella, Joshua Tyson and his wife Catherine and their children Dan, Ian and Eliza. She is also survived by her beloved niece Susan Keener, daughter of her deceased brother Paul Hillman, and her husband Bill Keener and their children Jeffrey and Sarah. She was predeceased by another granddaughter Robin Dixon Domino, and a nephew Bruce Hillman, who left two sons, Bryce and Vaughn.

Cemetery: Cemetery Not Applicable

Location: Munson-Lovetere Southbury

Services: Internment will take place in the spring, in the family plot in Hardwick, MA, at the convenience of the family.

Visitation: There are no calling hours.
