IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter A.
Kinney
July 8, 1935 – February 19, 2024
Peter Andrew Kinney, 88, passed away peacefully in Southbury, CT on February 19, 2024. He is predeceased by his son, Kevin, parents William and Hila (Hatch) Kinney, and sisters Dorothy Rose, Mildred Kintner, and Theresa Wega.
Born in Johnson City, NY, Peter attended Johnson City High School, where he served as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper and played basketball and football. As an Eagle Scout, he earned the Order of the Arrow distinction. Peter attended St. Bernard's Seminary and St. Michael's College in Toronto, and earned a B.A. from Lemoyne College, an M.A. from Western Reserve University, and an Ed.D. in psychology from Boston University. Early in his career, he worked as a middle school math teacher in Cleveland, a career counselor at Northeastern University, and a court psychologist at the Stoughton District Court practicing mediation.
In 1966, Peter settled in Sharon, MA, and in 1970 he established Kinney Associates, a private practice specializing in family therapy, where he continued counseling clients for 45 years. He also co-founded the Cape and Islands Family Institute, providing professional development for family therapists. Working from home for most of his career, Peter was a hands-on dad who was always attentive to his seven children. A patient and tireless father, he loved helping with their schoolwork and supporting their individual interests.
Peter served the Sharon community as the Chairman of the Youth Council, and taught CCD and confirmation classes at Our Lady of Sorrows. An early computer enthusiast, Peter researched and acquired all the cutting-edge innovations in computer technology starting in the early 1980's and continuing throughout his life. He self-published the Haiti News, a newsletter that raised humanitarian awareness and networked aid organizations serving people in Haiti, where he traveled on many mission trips.
A lifelong nature lover, Peter enjoyed camping, hiking, and boating with his children. He spent many summers on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard and traveled to Ireland, where he biked the countryside with his daughters. He enjoyed videotaping his children's and grandchildren's sports and performances. He helped coordinate family reunions and authored newsletters to keep his extended family in regular contact. Peter was a philosophical, spiritual person who dedicated his life to helping others in need.
Peter is survived by six children: Bridget (Shawn) Buckless, Karen Kinney, Maura (Louie) Kireopoulos, Brian Kinney, Clare (Marc) Nespoli, and Michael (Elizabeth Barry) Kinney; fourteen grandchildren: Brendan Buckless, Diana Ernst, Colin Purdy, Sheila and Mark Johnson, Caroline, Daniel, and Jack Kireopoulos, Cate and Matthew Nespoli, and Julia, Sarah, Lily, and Ava Kinney; and two great-grandchildren.
