IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter R.
Johannsen, Jr.
May 3, 1964 – August 11, 2025
Peter Johannsen, beloved father, son, and brother died suddenly at his home in Oxford, CT on August 11, 2025.
Peter was a master carpenter and artisan, who in recent years worked to install custom staircases. He was known by friends and family for his extraordinary skill in turning ordinary wood into wooden wonders.
He loved nature, was informed and opinionated on environmental issues, and treasured spending time on the acres he owned in Oxford. He believed that we are deeply connected to the earth and need to respect and care for it—and in turn, it will respect and care for us. And his devotion to animals was evidenced by his two dogs, three cats and the recent addition of chickens.
Peter was born on May 3, 1964 at New York Hospital in Manhattan to Carole and the late Peter Johannsen Sr. He spent his first three years with his parents and grandfather in Stewart Manor, Long Island. In 1967, the family moved with Peter's newborn baby sister to Danbury, CT where he attended schools. Later, Peter and his wife, Andrea, moved to Sandy Hook, CT where they welcomed the birth of their two children. They moved to Oxford, CT in 2006.
He is survived by his children, Mason P. Johannsen of Oxford, and Savannah A. Johannsen of New Haven, by his mother, the Rev. Dr. Carole Johannsen, his sister and brother-in-law, Christine Johannsen and Richard Harrison of Carmel, NY, his nephew and nieces, and his former wife, Andrea Giordano-Johannsen.
Peter died at home on the land he loved, surrounded by his animals. He was intensely proud of his children, and deeply loved by his family. There will be a celebration of his life at the Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, 235 Main Street North, Southbury, CT on August 22, 2025 from 10 to noon, followed by a gathering at his sister's home in Carmel, NY to remember and celebrate his life and love, and to support and comfort his family.
Those who would like to honor his memory are invited to contribute to Pibbles and More Animal Rescue at https://www.pmarinc.org or to an animal rescue organization of their choice.
